All vehicles must carry chains during the proclaimed season –
start of June long weekend to end of ski season. Chains must be
carried from Harrietville on the western approach and Cobungra from
the eastern approach. Chains must be fitted where directed. Failing
to carry or fit chains when directed to do so is a driving offence
and fines apply. Police actively patrol Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain
during winter. Chains are available from Hoys Ski Hire in Harrietville
and Billies Ski Hire in Omeo.
I have an All Wheel Drive Vehicle, do I need to fit chains?
The short answer is YES, only vehicles with engaged 4 wheel drive
may proceed beyond chain fitting bays without fitting chains, unless
the 4 wheel drive exception is removed and all vehicles are required
to fit chains.
Is there fuel in Dinner Plain?
No, there nearest service stations are Bright and Omeo, so best
to fill up before you climb the mountain. The service stations in
these towns all carry Alpine Diesel, which is very necessary for
diesel vehicles, which are prone to not starting if there is little
or no Alpine mix in the tank.
